Kensington Action Plan

Now that the former Moonee Valley section of Kensington has been amalgamated with the City of Melbourne (as from 1 July 2008), this initiative is of historical interest only.

How it began

At the time of a large-scale development proposal in Hobsons Road, the Kensington
Association was concerned that a development of that size would have impacts on the
wider Kensington community. We were concerned about the impact on traffic, schools,
health services, and public transport, and that there was no overall Kensington precinct
plan within which a development of that size could be assessed. We therefore approached
the City of Melbourne with a request that it commence a precinct plan for the City of
Melbourne section of Kensington. Subsequently, the City of Moonee Valley also got
involved. This was the genesis of the Kensington Action Plan, an overall plan for the
whole community of Kensington that would ensure that there was a coordinated approach to
all aspects of the two Councils' responsibilities in Kensington.

The Plan was adopted by the cities of Melbourne and Moonee Valley in August 2005. It was
a 5-year plan, 2005-2010, and was developed in close collaboration with the Kensington
community and other stakeholders. Public workshops were held so that local residents
could input into the plan. Various drafts of the plan were also considered by officers
of the Kensington Association.

Annual Monitoring Report
A key commitment of the Plan was to monitor progress of actions taken, and report back to
the community via an annual monitoring report.

Now that the suburb is now under one council, this work is dealt with in the normal planning activities of the City of Melbourne.
