December 2006

Record of the End-of-Year function of the Kensington Association, held 4 December 2006

Apologies:  Paris Aristotle, Fiona Burnes, Cr Catherine Ng, Bronwyn Pike, Rowan Rafferty, Lord Mayor John So, Wendy Taylor, Jan Wild

Members enjoyed drinks and nibblies.  Richard Reilly, Chair of the Association introduced, Caz Healy, the CEO of the Doutta Galla Community Health Centre, who spoke briefly about the proposed redevelopment plan for the Centre.

Richard then spoke of the achievements of the Association during 2006:

Condolence
Richard drew members’ attention to the sad new of the passing away of local Moonee Valley Councillor, Association member and friend, Lydia Kauzlaric, after a long battle with illness.  Lydia worked tirelessly both for her local community and for social justice on a wider scale.  Her funeral was to be held at St Brendan's at 2pm 5 December.  Tony Dare would represent the Association.

Achievements 2006
Richard noted that late in 2005 the Association had commenced a campaign to reunify Kensington.  It had completed a poll of local residents and traders with the overwhelming result that over 90% favoured reunification under the city of Melbourne.  This result was communicated to the State government.

The Association held a “Meet the candidates” meeting on 15 November 2006, after letterboxing all residences in Kensington.  The Holy Rosary School Hall was full to hear a commitment that a re-elected Labor government would review Kensington’s boundaries. The letter from the Minister for Local Government to local member Bronwyn Pike said in part:

I am pleased to inform you that as a result of these representations [from Ms Pike] if a Labor government is elected a panel will be established under 220A of the Local Government Act 1989 to review the Kensington boundary between Moonee Valley City Council and the Melbourne City Council.

The MCC-MVCC Kensington Action Plan was finalised with input from the Association.

Supported by the Association, the area next to the Maribyrnong Stock Bridge (Lot A9 Stage 2) in Kensington Banks was acquired by the City of Melbourne for public open space.

Several inappropriate development proposals were abandoned, following opposition from local residents supported by the Association.

The right-turn arrow at the Macaulay, Kensington and Epson Roads intersection has been working well – now over 12 months old but years in the making!

The Association was represented in the North Melbourne Football Ground redevelopment committee.

A community notice board will be sited at the Macaulay Credit Cooperative early in 2007.

The Association lobbied for funds for the redevelopment of Doutta Galla Community Health Centre, a measure that was announced by the Minister of Health during the election campaign.

Tony Dare, assisted by web designer Joe Langdon, continued to develop and update the Association website during 2006.  Richard commended the site to members:  www.kensingtonassociation.org.au

The Association commented on proposals for the South Kensington Railway station and gave input into some fresh ideas for this area.

Thank you’s
