Welcome to Adam Bandt, Greens candidate for the Federal seat of Melbourne Mr Bandt, the Greens candidate in the forthcoming Federal election, spoke to the meeting about some key issues that should be a priority in the area. He identified the proposed East-West Tunnel as an issue of particular concern, and stressed the need to rechannel resources into enhanced public transport options. 2. The Boundaries Review The meeting discussed the need to ensure that all residents knew about the opportunity to make a submission to the Panel. The Kensington Association submission is almost complete and will be submitted prior to Friday’s deadline. Residences have been letterboxed and David Ettershank organized a street stall for the last two Saturdays. Thanks were expressed to those involved. 3. Holland Park Master Plan An alternative configuration to the current Holland Park Master Plan has been presented to the last Holland Park Consultative Committee. The proposal was considered by the meeting and precipitated a significant discussion. Issues identified included: • There is a need for more good quality, current data on traffic and parking in the area. • Car parking in the park next to the swimming pool is highly undesirable and an internal road, linking Altona Street to Kensington Road, doubly so. • Nothing should be done that will increase the amount of traffic in Altona Street. • The Kensington/Flemington Junior Sports Club is keen to maintain the current configuration of the ovals. • There is also a view that the sporting fields should be realigned to create at least one quality passive recreation space. • It is understood that Melbourne City Council are working on some other design options. It was agreed that when those and the updated data are available there should be proper consultation with all stakeholders, including the Childcare centre. 4. North Melbourne Recreation Reserve The first concept plan has been presented to the Consultative Committee. Clive Gartner, the Association representative on the committee, reported on the proposal and there was an extensive discussion. There was some concern expressed at the sheer size of the building. There was also a strong view expressed that management of the overall complex should be vested with an entity such as the YMCA (with appropriate stakeholder advisory committee) rather than the Kangaroos Football Club, which is a private company and would face an obvious conflict of interest. |
