Minutes of the Kensington Association meeting and end-of-year function, held on 3 December 2007
Accomplishments and acknowledgements for 2007 1. Production of 250 “Welcome to Kensington” kits for newcomers to Kensington, produced by Carolyn Webster, updated by Ann Hood, coordinated by Tony Dare. These kits have been distributed to local real estate agents, schools and community groups. This project has been funded by the City of Melbourne Community Information Support (CIS) grants scheme. The Association has been successful in obtaining another grant for 2008, which, among other approved items, will fund the production of two new brochures: “Kensington Story” about the history of Kensington, and “Green Kensington” about green issues. Richard thanked the City of Melbourne, represented by Cr Brian Shanahan, for its continuing support of the Association, via the CIS fund. 2. Action on trucks in Macaulay Road – there has been some progress during 2007, but it is acknowledged that more is required. 3. The KA supported the Kensington Women’s Dinner with a donation of $100. 4. In March, the KA extended a cordial welcome to new Moonee Valley Councillor, Rose Iser. The KA thanks Ms Iser for her actions leading to the defeat of the backpackers development proposal at the cnr of Racecourse and Rankins Roads, her support in a successful resolution of the Centennial Hotel issue and her initiative in starting a Neighbourhood Watch Group in the Rankins-Racecourse Roads area. 5. The Association thanks the City of Moonee Valley in general, and in particular, its regulations officer, Terrence Pirie, in pursuing the matter of the Centennial Hotel to a successful conclusion. 6. Thank you to Clive Gartner has represented the Association on the North Melbourne Recreation Reserve Community Consultation Committee. 7. A community noticeboard has been established in the window of the Macaulay Credit Cooperative, coordinated by Fiona Burnes, funded by the City of Melbourne. 8. Thank you to Therese Fitzgerald has represented the Association on the Melbourne West Police-Community Consultative Committee, and Megan Davison on the committee for Flemington. 9. A Reunite Kensington Campaign Committee was appointed - Fiona Burnes, Tony Dare, David Ettershank, Richard Reilly – that coordinated the Association’s response to the opportunity to reunite Kensington. Members met with the Panel (twice) and the City of Melbourne, Tony Dare coordinated a letter drop across the whole of Kensington, alerting residents to the opportunity to make a submission. This involved 12 teams and over 40 volunteers from the Association. Thanks to Nick and Erica for their contributions in finalising the KA submission (see KA website). 10. The Association thanks local member, the Hon Browyn Pike, for carrying resident concerns about the boundary issue to the Minister for Local Government, and obtaining agreement for the review Panel. 11. Richard thanked Anna Dare for organizing delicious nibblies for the party, Tony Dare for masterminding the drinks and Glen and Martelle McBride for providing DJ music free for the function. 12. He presented Sister Kerry with a donation to the Holy Rosary School in recognition of the facilities that have been made available to the Association for its meetings and functions over the year. 13.
