Minutes of the Kensington Association meeting 6 December 2004This was a social event held at Hardimans Hotel, where we discussed the accomplishments of the Association for 2004: Accomplishments 2004 The Association assisted in blocking a proposed high-density residential development planned for the area bounded by Hobson¹s Road, the Maribyrnong River, the railway line and Kensington Road. Currently, it appears that the proposal has been abandoned. The Association assisted with gaining continued funding for Kensington Toy Library, sited at the Sports and Recreation Centre. We continued liaison with the Melbourne City Council re. traffic problems in Banks area, leading to tangible progress with more expected in the near future. The Association influenced final arrangements at the Gatehouse Street-Smithfield Road-Flemington Racecourse intersection (re the new entrance into the racecourse), leading to modifications of the original plan, to the advantage of residents in the Banks area. The Association assisted in blocking a proposed high-density residential development planned for the Simplot (Four and Twenty) factory site. Currently, it appears that the proposal has been abandoned. During the year, we launched the Kensington Association website: www.kensingtonassociation.org.au. We completed the Kensington Association fridge magnets project, which will assist in publicizing the Association. The Association gained an increased Community Information Support Scheme (CISS) grant this year from the Melbourne City Council. The CISS grant has been used for various projects in the past, including the Kensington Directory, launched last year. Leading community activist and Association member, Ms Lydia Kauzlaric, was elected Mayor the Moonee Valley Council. Association members participated in activities re the Kensington Precinct Plan, which now involves both the Melbourne and the Moonee Valley councils. This plan, which was strongly supported by the Association, is expected to bring great benefits to the area as it unfolds in future years. The Association continued to monitor the progress of the Kensington Estate redevelopment, and has been able to modify some of the more objectionable features of the plan and force the builders to refrain from causing a nuisance and reducing the amenity of the area. Our thanks to Secretary David Ettershank and Committee Member Geoff Cox for being vigilant. Committee member Geoff Cox has been our community representative on the Board of the Kensington Primary School. Thanks to Committee member Greg Bray, who has been our representative on local committees opposing the construction of the Flemington Racecourse bund wall. On Saturday, 4 December a successful barbecue and fun day was held at the Bayswater Reserve. Some 30 adults and a similar number of children participated. Thanks to Fiona Burns and David Michelsen for organizing this event. Members thanked Jeff Langdon, who is retiring from the Treasurer¹s position to take up a new life near Ballarat.
