Minutes of the meeting of the Kensington Association held on 7 March 2005

1. Proposed gym at the Kensington Community and Recreation Centre

The YMCA presented a proposal for a gym within the community complex. The plan is to convert part of the community hall (currently the carpeted section) for use as a gym with training
Equipment, the remainder of the hall still being able to accommodate 250 (theatre style seating). The YMCA representatives said that currently the hall is under-utilized, only being fully occupied on three occasions in the last two years. A gym would increase the utilization of the area, plus produce increased income. If an event required more than 250, the Centre would pay for temporary staging and seating in the basketball gym. Although there was some support for the proposal, some members expressed reservations, and the YMCA promised to bring further information to a subsequent meeting.

2. Bund Wall at the Flemington Racecourse

Members have observed that a temporary stone wall construction has been built along the racecourse side of the Maribynong River that appears to be a prototype of the proposed bund wall. Committee member Greg Bray is monitoring the issue of the bund wall.

3. MCC approval to purchase lot A9 Kensington Banks

The MCC has approved the purchase of Lot adjoining the Maribyrnong Stock Bridge, thus ensuring that it will remain as public open space. It was resolved to thank the MCC for its action.

4. South Kensington Station

Members have heard that there is a proposal to modernize South Kensington Station. It was resolved that the Association write to lend its support to the proposal.

5. Panel Beaters on McCaulay Road

Its was resolved that the Association write to both the Melbourne and the Moonee Valley councils regarding instances of cars being parked contrary to regulations.

6. Preventing cars from accessing Smithfield Road from Hobsons Road

The meeting was told that barriers will be erected to prevent cars from driving up the grass bank from Hobsons Road to gain access to Smithfield Road at the Maribyrnong Bridge.

7. Community representative on the Kensington Primary School Council

Anyone interested in representing the community on the school council is welcome (representatives do not need to have children enrolled in the school). For further details, contact Mark Ryan, Acting Principal on 9376 6013.

9. Residents take action on traffic in Epson Road

Residents have presented a petition to the MCC regarding traffic in Epsom Road. In discussion, it was noted that although the Kensington Association was in favour of any proposal to reduce through traffic, it was necessary to devise some specific proposals. Traffic issues would be considered in the Kensington Community Action Plan. The Association will monitor developments.

10. Priorities for the Moonee Valley Council

It was resolved to send a list of priorities for the Moonee Valley section of Kensington to the Moonee Valley Council, via the Mayor Cr Lydia Kaularic, and to cordially invite the Mayor to attend a forthcoming meeting to discuss the priorities with members.

The next meeting of the Kensington Association will be held on Monday 4 April 2005.
