October 2005

Meeting of the Kensington Association held 3 October 2005

Apologies:  Rowan Raffety, Jan Wild, Greg Bray, Cr Lydia Kauzlaric, Cr Fraser Brindley,  Fincina Hopgood, Chris Thorn, Vic and Lyn Borghouts

1.  Lot A 9 (adjoining Maribyrnong River Stock Bridge)

The MCC is currently negotiating with developers regarding a piece of land on the Lot A9 site that is currently zoned residential.  Council has previously passed a motion that the total Lot A9 site is to be purchased by Council.  The Association's position on this issue is that Council should continue to action the passed motion and negotiate to purchase the full Lot A9 site.

2.  Boundary issues

In 1993, the State government split Kensington without reference to residents’ views.    Association policy is that residents and business owners in Kensington should have the opportunity to express their views in a democratic process.  The Kensington Association intends to conduct its own poll on this issue, so that any Association policy will be broadly based. The text of a questionnaire was agreed to.  The intention is that the questionnaire will go to every residence and business property in Kensington.

3. Speakman Street

Discussion about traffic management is continuing.  The Association supports the original traffic management scheme.

4.  Child Care

Fiona Burnes, the Association representative on this issue has had discussions with the Kensington Community Child Care Co-operative.  The Association supports efforts to get more child care for Kensington.

5. Illegal entry into Flemington Racecourse from Gatehouse Drive

Residents report that cars and horse-floats are accessing the racecourse directly from Gatehouse Drive, contravening not only traffic regulations but firm agreements made with the VRC racecourse when the new entrance from Smithfield Road was agreed to.   It was agreed that as well as the MCC, the Victoria Police should be alerted.

6. Free shuttle bus service in Kensington

The Association understands that the MCC is considering a free shuttle bus service that could include some key stops in Kensington.  This would especially assist older residents.  The proposal is favoured in principle and further details are awaited.

7. Unfinished bitumen in Stockman's Way

It has been reported that footpaths in some section of the Way are incomplete.  The Association resolved to ask MCC to either press the developer, Urban Pacific, to complete bitumen work or undertake the works themselves.

8. Kensington Women's Dinner

Cr Kauzlaric, Mayor of Moonee Valley Council, has informed the Association that the Kensington Town Hall will be made available for the 2006 Kensington Women's Dinner.
