Minutes of the meeting of the Kensington Association held on 7 November 2005
Apologies: Fincina Hopgood and Christian Thorn 1. Simplot (Four and Twenty factory) Site Committee member and resident of Arden Street, Darragh O¹Brien, spoke on issues of concern to the local residents, a number of whom were present. Some 220 additional vehicles per hour at peak time on Childers and Lloyd Streets are anticipated, arising from the redevelopment. Resolved: That a meeting be sought with Catherine Ng as the Chair of the MCC Planning Committee and John Noonan as head planning to discuss residents¹ concerns and clarify issues pertaining to the specifics of the proposed development on the Simplot site. 2. Proposed development at1B Westbourne Street 1B Westbourne House were a former stables and large block. The current owner is proposing to build a large number of apartments that will border 8 adjoining sites. The details of the proposal were considered and there was a strong feeling that the proposal represented an over-development of the site. Resolved: That the Chair, Richard Reilly, contact the planning officer at MCC to advise that an objection was being lodged. 3. News from Moonee Valley from Mayor, Cr Lydia Kauzlaric Lydia spoke about a number of local issues involving the City of Moonee Valley. She also reiterated her commitment to resolving municipal boundary issues. Lydia was accompanied by Jim Cusack, who has nominated for the forthcoming municipal election in the Deakin Ward. 4. Survey of resident opinion about reuniting Kensington A team of 35 Association members will letterbox residences and businesses Kensington this month. Premises will receive a Kensington Association brochure and a letter with a tear-off slip, asking for people¹s views on whether the suburb should be reunited under one Council. The questionnaire will be reproduced on the Association website, www.kensingtonassociation.org.au, and people will be able to respond direct over the Internet. 5. Lot A9 Kensington Banks Contrary to previous the MCC resolution of the Planning and Environment Committee, the Committee is looking to rescind the previous decision and purchase only 3/4¹s of the previously-defined block. Resolved: That the Kensington Association is deeply concerned and disappointed at the prospect that the previous decision to acquire all of Lot A9 Stage 2 Hobson¹s Road, Kensington Banks may be rescinded. 6. Holy Rosary Family Fun Day The Kensington Association will be setting up a stall at the Holy Rosary Primary School Family Fun Day, to be held on Saturday 12 November. Volunteers are sought to roster themselves for the following time slots: 10am 12noon, 12noon 2pm or 2 4pm. 7. Community Information Support Scheme grant The Treasurer, Tony Dare, was authorised to proceed with implementing the communications strategy. 8. Meeting with Councillor David Wilson: City of Melbourne Fiona Burnes reported on a productive meeting with Councillor David Wilson and a number of local residents groups. During the meeting, the shortage of child care places was highlighted. 9. Right Hand Turn Arrow: Epsom Road into Kensington Road The meeting welcomed the news that this facility is now operating. The Kensington Association, supporting local residents, campaigned for 6 years for this traffic measure. The issues between various authorities were finally resolved when the City of Melbourne decided unilaterally to fund the project. Resolved: Richard Reilly to write former Councillor Kevin Chamberlin and Lord Mayor John So expressing the Association¹s appreciation for their efforts. 10. Christmas Break-Up The final meeting of the year, as before, will be a social function. It will be held from 7.30pm on Monday, 5 December, with food and beverages to be sourced from local traders. After various options had been discussed, it was agreed to ask Holy Rosary if the function can be held in the Holy Rosary School Hall. The next meeting of the Kensington Association will be a social function to held on Monday, 7 December from 7:30pm. |
