Why do residents want Kensington reunited under the City of Melbourne? - part 1

Our poll of residents and traders in all of Kensington early in 2006 produced an extraordinary result:  Of the 604 who returned a questionnaire, over 90% want a reunited Kensington under the City of Melbourne.  Those who are already under Melbourne want to stay there; those under Moonee Valley want to rejoin Melbourne.   

Here are comments from some people who now live in the City of Melbourne part of Kensington and want to stay with Melbourne:

  • I am happy that I am under city of Melbourne and want to stay that way.  I DO NOT want to be under Moonee Valley!!

  • The Moonee Valley Council is a disgrace of infighting.
 
  • City of Melbourne look after street cleaning and parks far better than Moonee Valley, e.g. footpath outside Kensington Primary Epsom Road, a small park area cnr. Epsom-Macaulay, both Moonee Valley.  Melbourne CC also act promptly when issues reported.
 
  • City of Moonee Valley is not interested in Kensington.
 
  • After living in many cities and suburbs I would rate Melbourne City Council one of the best.  Great resources, very responsive to residents needs, excellent care of parks and gardens, street trees.  Rubbish and recycling is also very organized.  Good rates.
 
  • Melb CC is more efficient, offers better services, we are inner city so they should administer us.

  • Only want City of Melbourne if Kensington is to be reunited.  Personally do not want to be under the City of Moonee Valley as feel residents are better served and have lower rates under City of Melbourne. The division of Kensington makes no sense geographically, administratively or from a community perspective.  We were always part of Melbourne and should return to the MCC who is the more committed council.
 
  • Moonee Valley only interested in the revenue, will lead to loss of services.  Rates would increase significantly under Moonee Valley.

  • Kensington is an inner city fringe, not suburban fringe.  The city of Moonee Valley has not seemed to be able to creatively take up the issues of inner city residents or diverse populations.  Kensington has a history of community activism that City of MV has not seemed to be able to support except through individual councilors.  Mind you the restructure of CoM has meant that the council is further away from the people than it used to be.  A reunified Kensington will help make this area more noticeable.
 
  • Kensington’s long association and history are tied up with the city of Melbourne. Our inner city neighbourhood has little in common with the suburbs of Moonee Valley.
 
  • My experience is that the City of Melbourne provides excellent service.  If the choice was between being united under the City of Moonee Valley or being separate, I would vote to stay separate.  I do not want to be administered by the City of Moonee Valley.
 
  • I feel that Kensington is neglected by MV as it is more focused on the Niddrie area.  The state of services such as footpaths and parks in Kensington is appalling, the splitting of the suburb and resulting strange configuration of the 2 municipalities does not make sense, e.g. most of the Lynchs Bridge estate is in Melbourne with a small deprived bit in MV.
 
  • We do not wish to go backwards by being united under a poorer, lesser council.
 
  • Having recently moved within Kensington & changed councils – I realize how much the COM cares & looks after Kensington in comparison to CMV.  COM understands high density living and provides a better service to the community than my experience with CMV.

  • Moonee Valley Council services are noticeably inferior to Melbourne Council services.  We have had years of experience of both.  Reunification makes sense but it would be a retrograde step to move back to Moonee Valley Council.  Don’t even think about it!
