SOUTH KENSINGTON STATION TO GET A FACELIFT South Kensington Station will receive a make-over under a $10 million State Government program to clean up Melbourne's train stations. Member for Melbourne, Bronwyn Pike, said the refurbishment would make the station a more pleasant place for local commuters. “The Station Refurbishment Program is part of the Victorian Government's plan to undertake the biggest revitalisation of Victorian rail in more than 120 years. “Depending on need, stations may get a fresh coat of paint, cleaned tiles, resurfaced access ramps, new lighting, handrails and other minor works,” Ms Pike said. Minister for Transport Peter Batchelor said railway stations were extremely important to our communities. “Stations are critical pieces of social and economic infrastructure, and form part of the identity of their town or suburb. “Communities rightly want to make sure that their local train station is safe for all to use, and looks clean and tidy. “This program of improvements will enable 19 train stations around Melbourne to get facelift.” Mr Batchelor said work on the stations would be delivered by Connex, with projects expected to be finished by October 2006. Further details of works to be undertaken will be announced as each project begins in the New Year. |
